Rylie, my four year old, has been invited to a lot of kids' birthday parties in the past couple months. For better or worse, we are good at disproving the fear that a homeschooled child can't make friends!
Anyway, I've noticed that my kids are the only ones still having birthday parties at home. I like making up crafts and games and planning a whole gala based around my daughter's favorite thing of the moment. I even bake a fancy cake, and this year, we wore costumes so that the full cast of Gilligan's Island would be in attendance at Rylie's themed party. It's fun for me, and for the kids.
However, I'm a little afraid that my home-made parties are going to be thrown under the bus in favor of the party places we've been to this year. It seems like moms just don't want to plan kid's birthday parties anymore. They would rather let places like Oogles n Googles do all the work.
I know my kids have fun at these parties, and I enjoy seeing what's out there. But, I am not in any hurry to pay someone else to throw a party for my own children. I will just keep hoping that they end up like their mom -- I have fond childhood memories of all the great parties my mom cooked up!
